Autonomous Vehicle Challenge Advances the Future of Wildfire Logistics

On June 24, Central Florida Tech Grove hosted the Autonomous Vehicle Challenge Demo Day at the Beasley Knob Off-Highway Vehicle Trail in Georgia's Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. The event brought together the USDA Forest Service, the Department of Defense (DoD), and industry partners to evaluate autonomous ground vehicles designed to improve wildfire logistics in some of the nation's most demanding terrain.


The demonstration reflects Central Florida Tech Grove's mission to accelerate the transition of innovative technologies by connecting government, industry, and academia to solve complex national security and public safety challenges. By creating opportunities for collaboration and real-world technology validation, Tech Grove helps move promising solutions from concept to operational capability.

Three companies—Goodman Technologies, LLC, Terasynth, and MVP Robotics Inc., demonstrated autonomous ground systems capable of transporting firefighting equipment and supplies across steep, rocky, and uneven terrain while carrying payloads of up to 800 pounds. Each vehicle was subjected to rigorous testing over challenging off-road courses that simulated the demanding conditions firefighters encounter in the field. Evaluators assessed vehicle mobility, payload stability, autonomous navigation, and overall mission performance under realistic wildfire response scenarios.

Terasynth emerged as the top-performing competitor, demonstrating exceptional off-road capability, reliability, and autonomy while traversing the event's rugged terrain. The demonstration underscored the growing potential for autonomous ground systems to reduce firefighter exposure to hazardous conditions by delivering critical equipment, supplies, and logistical support to firelines that are inaccessible or unsafe for conventional vehicles.

Beyond the technical evaluations, the event strengthened collaboration among federal agencies, industry leaders, and innovation partners working to advance autonomous technologies for operational use. Supported by the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP), the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), The Ember Alliance's Integrated Research Management Team (IRMT), and the Eastern Innovation Landscape Network (EILN), the event provided a forum for participants to exchange ideas, build strategic partnerships, and identify pathways to accelerate technology adoption.
